Raising our families next to a raw Internet is not a good idea. Objectionable content is so rampant it’s nearly impossible to avoid even when conducting the most benign searches.
This is a huge and obvious problem faced by families around the world and many Parental Control (PC) products have been introduced over the years to try and solve it, see a need fill a need. Unfortunately it’s a very difficult and complex problem to solve correctly which most have not.
The main component of any PC product is / should be the family safe Internet it produces. If you test the top five PC products you’ll get five very different Internet experiences. So which one is good? How do you know what’s good?
A legitimately family safe Internet service will comprise at least the following:
- SafeSearch Enforced
- Bad websites blocked
- Quality Internet experience
Feature one (critical): SafeSearch enforcement
The Internet is composed of three categories of content: Websites or ALL, Images and Videos.
When you search for content using Google or Bing (the only two US based search engines left – DuckDuckGo is a search proxy that uses other search engines) you will be presented with those three categories of results.
⇒ A legitimate family safe internet solution will protect all three categories of Internet content. If it does not then you do NOT have a family safe Internet.
Example of a fail: I search for “boobs” and of the three categories returned only the websites category is blocked, but Images and Videos are full of Internet Pornography. So what kind of Internet content protection do I have? Not much.
The only way to ensure these three categories of Internet content never contain any pornography is through SafeSearch enforcement. Google, Bing and DuckDuckGo all offer a SafeSearch option that when enabled said search engine will never return anything pornographic for a search term. In fact it will not even allow you to search for clear pornography:
The trick is enforcing this on everything device without installing software. Kibosh enforces SafeSearch across all devices even in incognito mode. It cannot be turned off, it cannot by bypassed and ensures no pornography will be seen in Image or Video results, ever.
Plus Kibosh gives you SafeSearch Lock-In which ensures that only SafeSearch enforced search engines can be used: Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, SwissCow, and YouTube. By blocking access to the rest (and who’ll notice anyway) we ensure our Internet is a very family safe place indeed.
Feature two (critical): websites blocked
SafeSearch will ensure that most bad search terms will not be allowed, and Image / Video search results will never contain pornography. But what about going directly to a bad website either by typing the address or through an email link?
This is where domain blocking comes into play. However, this is only as good as your list of bad websites to block. Kibosh has developed a proprietary web scraping technology and is able to search for and tag the bad websites which the Kibosh filter then blocks. Our lists are accurate, current and always growing. You would think that after a few years all the bad websites would be blocked right? Wrong, they just_keep_coming. It’s crazy, but Kibosh has you covered.
Feature three (critical): quality of the Internet experience.
Ok, so lets say you have found a family safe Internet solution that covered features 1& 2, but the overall Internet experience is poor: choppy browsing, pages not loading, complaints from your users (i.e., the fam!). You will eventually turn the Internet filtering off because no one will long tolerate a poor quality Internet today.
This happens for a few reason, the main one being that your family safe internet solution is performing the Internet Content Filtering (a resource intensive service) on the device and the device cannot keep up with a busy house / office. So, unless your device is a server grade hardware you will have a poor Internet experience even if the family safe internet part is good.
This is why Kibosh performs the Internet Content Filtering on distributed servers in the cloud (and we are the only one). It is the only way to produce a very fast and seamless family safe Internet experience.
Feature four: enforcement
First, if the family safe internet solution you choose only blocks the bad stuff on the Internet then no-one will want to bypass it because frankly they’ll not even know it’s there (exactly like the Kibosh experience).
However, let’s say you have some users that might be developing some bad habits and want to persist – enforcement of the family safe Internet comes into play. The number one way to bypass every family safe internet filter in the world is to change the local DNS servers on your PC device. This is not too hard and instructions are all over the web.
Kibosh blocks DNS Bypass, along with DNS over HTTPS, DHS Hijacking and more. Only a VPN can bypass the Kibosh filter and that’s as it should be, by design nothing stops a VPN.
When you have all four then you have a legitimate Family Safe Internet as good as can be done, which is pretty darn good.
